The ancient city of iron
Since antiquity Follonica has been an important center for the working of iron and cast iron, reaching its height of production as a steelworking town in the 16th century under the Grand Duke of Tuscany, who made it into the biggest manufacturer in the Tuscan state. This history continues up until 1960, the year in which the whole industrial complex ceased its activities.
The skills of the local master artisans in ironworking is visible in the church of San Leopoldo, one of the rare examples of religious architecture in cast iron in Europe, where there are precious decorative elements and finely inlaid interior furnishings.
The gulf of Follonica
Follonica represents the most important center of the gulf of the same name, that extencs from Piombino up to Punta Ala, covering a coastline formed by wonderful small bays, beaches and sandy depths, of fine golden sand. Embedded in green pine forests that alternate with wild stretches of mediterranean vegetation. The public Pinacoteca of Follonica, dating back to the beginning of the 1900s, is host to modern and contemporary art exhibitions.
