The region of Monteregio comprises the area of the Metallic Hills of High Grossetan Maremma, made up of the communities of Massa Marittima, Monterotondo, Montieri, Follonica, Scarlino, Gavorrano, Roccastrada and Castiglione della Pescaia. The path unwinds through unpolluted and wild landscapes and places rich in history and culture, from where you can depart to go on discovery of the wineries, wine shops, typical products and artisan boutiques.
An old taste
The Maremman culinary tradition offers incomparable typical dishes: the tortelli maremmani, the acquacotta, the hare pappardelle, the boar with olives and steamed snails.
There’s many delicacies to try along the trail: the pecorino, fresh or aged and the rovaggiolo, sausage of pork and boar, the Tuscan prosciutto, the panforte and the cantuccini to be accompanied by Vin Santo, chestnuts and mushrooms, vino novello and the typical bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil.
Of the wine the most well-known is produced in the area of the Metallic Hills by the name of Monteregio, recognized as DOC brand in 1994: the Monteregio Red is also available in versions Novello and riserva, the Monteregio white, and well appreciated are also the Vermentino and the Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice DOC.
The itineraries along the Wine Road of Monteregio
The first itinerary touches the communities of Monterotondo Marittimo, Follonica and Massa Marittima. Enchanting, near Accesa lake, are the Montioni Park and the medieval castles of Lecceta and Cugnano. The second itinerary includes the town of Roccastrada, sede del Museum of Wine and Vine , home to the and the wonderful landscape of the surrounding hills and interesting medieval villages.
The third itinerary traverses Castiglione della Pescaia with the castle that overlooks the coast, the archeological areas Vetulonia, Gavorrano e Scarlino con la riserva naturale delle “Bandite di Scarlino”. with the natural preserve of Bandite di Scarlino.
